Betty Garrett - 2018 Dallas Business Journal Women in Business Awards

Summer is over, the fall season is in full swing and I’m preparing for the holidays to start soon. My, how 2018 is passing by so very quickly.

This past weekend, I was out for brunch with a few of my colleagues and we engaged in a conversation about age, tenacity, and how to have staying power in one’s career. That conversation brought me full circle to thinking about the heady experience I had this summer being honored by The Dallas Business Journal as one of 30 Women in Business leaders for 2018.

You know, our careers will always ebb and flow with successes, failures, and sometimes even stagnate a bit. And guess what? That’s okay! Without giving away my age (I’m a southern lady, after all), what I’ve learned over the years is  when I reframe how I look at obstacles and figure out how to turn them into opportunities, I’m able to keep a positive attitude and keep going in forward motion!

With the right mindset and a spirit of giving back, we have the ability to positively influence others. For those of us who have been around long enough, we tend to take how much we’ve done for granted (I was reminded of this yesterday) and never considered this a part of our legacy.

As I descend from being on top of the world as being named one of the Women in Business honorees by the DBJ, I want to let you know how grateful I am for the support through out my career; I’ll never take the relationships, kindness, guidance, or friendship for granted! This would never have happened had it not been for you supporting me through the ups and downs in this crazy business.

As you know, my core values were instilled in me by my parents whom I dearly miss and wish they had been in the audience but they were on my shoulder instead.

It was an honor and privilege to be recognized by my peers and know this was one of the highlights of my journey.  It was a humbling experience one I will truly keep close to my vest with much gratitude.

Time to close this chapter, my friends, and move on to the next great career experience. What that’ll be, I’ve no idea. But, I am confident it will be tremendously fun and YOU will be part of my adventures.
